Here’s one very simple but life-changing advice that I first heard from Brain Tracy. Cut down on the TV at night by just one hour. Instead, use that hour to read books that could improve your life.
72 If you’re a salesman, search for the best and most useful books on improving your sales.
This applies to all fields, not just the work-related ones. Maybe you want to improve your health, and become a more energetic person. Or maybe you want to improve your study, your relations or perhaps do some personal development.
One hour a day is not much. But if you read for one hour a day on weekdays, that’s about 260 hours a year. That’s a large number of books and a lot of useful advice.
If you follow the ideas, who knows what great things and feelings could come into your life. Also, all that information and advice will start to open up your mind. You will start to see more chances in your life.
Now, you might think something like this:
1. I really don’t have the money……
Answer: Visit your public library or search the database. Or look for books that are used in places like amazon.com.
2. I really don’t have the time….
Answer: Buy audio-books(有声读物) and listen to them in the car while driving to and from work. Or copy them to your MP3 player and listen while riding your bike/bus to work or school. Recently selling audio-books through MP3-downloads has become popular.
Shut off the TV a little earlier and start reading.

One afternoon, in Paris, I took a trip to an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was expecting a quiet view(看) of some great painting.
A young couple were looking at the paintings in front of me. They were talking non-stop. I watched them a moment and noticed the woman was doing all the talking. In fact, I was surprised at the man. How could he stand her everlasting(无休止的)speech. Bored by their noise, I moved on.
I met them several times as I moved through those rooms of art. Each time I heard her voice, I moved away at once.
I was standing at the museum gift shop buying cards when the couple walked to the exit(出口).
“He is a brave man,”said the shop assistant, “Most of us would give up if we were blind at such a young age. But he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
It explained the non-stop talk! A student sense of shame came to my heart for what I was thinking just now. “But what does he get from the art?” I asked.
“His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
At that moment, I realized what is patience, courage and love. “Make-A-Wish” is one of the world’s most well-known charities. It makes wishes come true for children who have serious illness. It gives them hope and joy and helps them forget about their health problems and have fun.
It all started in 1980s in Phoenix. Arizona Christopher was a 7-year-old boy who was very sick. He always dreamed of becoming a police officer. Tommy Austin and Ron Cox, two police officers, made his wish come true. They gave Christopher a tour of the city in a police helicopter(直升机) and made a real police uniform for him.
There are four kinds of wishes children usually have:
I wish to go. Children usually want to travel or go to a concert, a game or a park.
I wish to meet. Children sometimes want to meet their favorite actors, singers or players.
I wish to be. Some children wish to become actors, singers or police officers.
I wish to have. They often want to have a computer, a game, a bike or many other things.
Let’s hope more wishes will come true in the future. People who work in the charity always try for the best. Almost 25,000 volunteers help, work or give money. Will you be one of them?
根据短文内容,判断下列句子正(T)、误(F)。(5分)
81. “Make-A-Wish” is a charity to help sick children.
82. The two police officers gave Christopher a tour of the city.
83. The passage introduces five kinds of children’s wishes.
84. Christopher’s wish belongs to “I wish to go”.
85. Many people are working for “Make-A-Wish”.
(D)
86. I am the bench-warmer of my soccer team. When there is a game, the coach never asks me to play. I think I’m a good player, but I haven’t had the chance to show it. How do I get my coach to let me play?
87. What can I do if I find that my best friend has been telling me lies.
88. My mom always buys me clothes I don’t like. But I usually don’t tell her I don’t like them. I’m worried I’ll hurt her feelings. Sometimes I tell her what I want to wear. But she still get me what she wants me to wear. What should I do?
89. I am a top student in my class. But my best friend’s school grade is not good. Before the mid-term exam, he asked me to “help” him- give him answers in the exam. I don’t know what to do. He’s my best friend. But I don’t want to cheat in exams, either.
90. My best friend is telling everyone about my low grade on a test. I am mad at her. What should I do?
A. If your mom thinks clothes you like aren’t good for you, you won’t change her mind. But you should share your ideas with her when you go shopping. Try this “I like these jeans because they are comfortable.” Or “I don’t like lace.” With a little time and effort, you’ll be able to get what you want.
B. You have every right to be angry. And you should tell your best friend how you feel. You could say, “My grades are my business, not yours. I’m angry that you told people my test score. You have no right to do that. Give him a chance to say sorry. Remember that a true friend shouldn’t enjoy making you sad.”
C. First, put yourself in your friend’s shoes. Why did he or she need to lie to you? Is he or she in a dilemma? Then imagine you were in his or her position. Would you have done the same thing? If you would, then you have a reason to forgive them.
D. Talk to your coach. Let him know what you want. Say, ”I think I am a good player, but I’d like to be even better. I’d like to get some game time.” Then put your heart into practice, and cheer for your teammates at games. If your coach sees that you are a good player, you’ll be in the game soon.
E. Don’t help your friend cheat. It’s not a helping hand. It’s wrong. If you have time, help him review the key points of every subject. Tell him you will help him in the future. You need to let your friend know that you want to help him, though it’s not the way he wants, it is a right way.
(E)
“Who did it?” asked the teacher. Thirty children tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out.
“Who did it?” she asked again. She wasn’t really asking; she was demanding an answer. She never became angry, but she was this time. She held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?”
“Oh,oh, ” I thought. “I was the one who broke the window. I did not do it on purpose. It was caused by a bad throw of a baseball. Why did it have to be me?”
If I admitted it, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? “My father would going to get mad at me ,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than me pulled it up. “I did it.” Then I was silent. It was hard enough to say what I had done. My teacher went to one of our library shelves and took down a book. She then began walking towards my desk. I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I was afraid that she was going to start with me.
“I know how you like birds, Henry,” she said as she stood looking down at my face. “Here is that field guide about birds and I often see you reading it after class. It’s yours. We got a new one from the school anyway. You will not be punished. But remember, it is only for your truthfulness.”
I couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my very own bird field guide, the very one that I had been saving up all my money to buy.
根据短文,回答下列问题。(10分)
91. Who would be angry if Henry admitted the truth?
92. Did Henry think the teacher would strike him when she was walking towards him?

95. What do you think of Henry?
