　　Andrew P. Another person who viewed the majorityas a poor guide is Holden Caulfield from the novelCatcher in the Rye. Holden is a rebellious young manwho is determined to see his own ideals andthoughts carried out. Throughout the novel, heconstantly opposes the public opinion ofconformity and seeks his own path ofindividualism. This individualism stems from hisendless imagination and unblocked freedom ofthought. It is Holden's commitment to followhimself as a guide that allows him to be truly unique, not just another number in themajority. Holden sees how joining the majority strips people of their own ability to think forthemselves and function as individuals. If one joins the group, that person loses their freedomas an individual. Thus, Holden beats down the temptations to follow the majority and thinksfreely for himself, allowing Holden to make choices that most benefits himself.
