Another illustration of the sacrificeinvolved in progress can be seen in the historicalRevolutionary War. 1775 and 1776 proved to be twoimportant years for the thirteen colonies that wouldsoon be known collectively as the United States ofAmerica. Troops led by generals such as GeorgeWashington and William Prescott fought daringlyagainst the British Army along the Eastern Coast ofNorth America. At the Battle of Bunker Hill, GeneralPrescott said to his troops, “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes.” This daringcommand exemplifies the notion that progress, or freedom in this case, could only be achievedthrough the sacrifice of human lives in close-range warfare.
